Diabetes

If you constantly have the urge to drink large amounts of water, then this could be a sign that you have a major health issue. Chronic dry mouth and extreme thirst are symptoms of type 1 and type 2 diabetes. One reason for this is the medications that are used to treat diabetes. Another reason for this is the high levels of sugar in the blood.

No one is sure as to why high amounts of sugar in the blood causes dry mouth. One explanation is that it’s the body’s natural way thinning out the blood. Too much sugar in the body causes the blood to become thick like syrup. Over time, thick blood can destroy the small veins and arteries in the eyes, brain, heart, kidneys, hands, and feet. This leads to blindness, kidney failure, heart attacks, strokes, and amputations. Your body’s natural reaction is to draw moisture from wherever it can within the body, like the salivary glands. This begins the cycle of excessive drinking and frequent urinating, which are characteristics of someone with diabetes.
