    Blocked Airways

    Coughing can also be caused by blocked airways. This is a common problem among small children. The blockage can be caused by inhaling objects accidentally i.e., a small toy or a chunk of food. In adults, the problem is common among individuals with small airways. Smoking can trigger a persistent cough among such individuals due to irritation in the throat, lungs and esophageal lining. Smoking (more so ingredients in tobacco) are linked to airway blockages and lung irritations which result in coughing.
