GERD (Gastro-esophageal reflux disease)
GERD is a chronic condition caused by mucosal lining damage in the esophagus and throat. The damage is usually caused by stomach acid which finds its way into the esophagus causing irritation/coughing. GERD is more severe when a person is lying or asleep (when gravity can’t keep the stomach acid down). For this reason, patients are advised to prop up their heads using pillows to keep the stomach acid in place.
