Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a condition that causes your nails to become thicker, discolored, and oddly shaped. The most common type of fungus that affects your toenails is called dermatophyte. It forms on the surface of your nails and goes through the cracks in your nails and skin. This fungus thrives when you are wearing shoes and socks where it is warm and damp. You may notice one affected toenail, but this fungus will easily spread to other toenails if left untreated.

Infected nails are both thick and brittle. The nails can look yellow or brown in color, and they can develop white spots in some cases. Ingrown nails are common because the fungus causes the nails to be warped and odd shaped. The fungus can also cause an infected nail to separate from the nail bed. When the fungus spreads to the skin around your toes, it causes athlete’s foot.

You can develop toenail fungus at any age, but you are more likely to get it as an adult. Your nails become dry and brittle as you get older, which causes cracks in your nails that allow the fungus to enter. Another risk factor is having diabetes. Diabetes can have a negative effect the blood circulation and nerve endings in your feet, which creates a situation where toenail fungus can develop. If your affected toenails are not treated, your nails can become permanently damaged. If you have toenail fungus, talk to your doctor to see what types of treatments are available.
