Treatment: Surgery
Surgery is used as an option to prevent the aorta from rupturing and to treat other heart problems that can affect the blood flow to other parts of the body. Surgery may be recommended depending on the size of the aorta and how fast the aorta is growing. The doctor will also consider the age, height, gender, and family history of the patient. The surgery involves replacing a portion of the damaged aorta with a piece of man-made material called a graft.
A leaky aortic or mitral valve must be surgically repaired or replaced immediately to prevent heart failure. The valve can be repaired if the leak is detected and surgically repaired in the early stages before the valve is damaged. Otherwise, the valve must be replaced.
