Understanding Marfan’s Syndrome

Treatment: Medication

Marfan syndrome affects people differently, so treatment plans need to be individualized according to symptoms each patient experiences. Regardless of the symptoms, a patient will need regular follow-up appointments for the rest of their life. This will give their doctor the opportunity to monitor their patient’s overall health, including their cardiovascular, eye, and skeletal health. This will also give their doctor the opportunity to update their patient’s medications.

Medications such as beta-blockers are usually prescribed to help to slow down or prevent the aorta from becoming enlarged. Beta-blockers are also used to relieve pressure within the aorta and other arteries. If a patient is unable to take beta-blockers because they suffer from asthma, then the patient can be prescribed calcium channel blockers.
