The Most Common Symptoms of Lupus

Light Sensitivity

As mentioned earlier, Lupus sufferers will often develop blisters and lesions on the skin as a result of exposure to sunlight. Similarly, existing lesions can worsen during flare ups, even without sun exposure. Indeed, the photosensitivity that occurs with Lupus and other autoimmune diseases occurs for a number of reasons. Normally, when people are out in sunlight, the skin reacts by absorbing and synthesizing vitamin D. However, those with Lupus have an intolerance to the exposure and the body will react to light as if it was being attacked by a virus.

Sometimes, people with Lupus can be out in sunlight without experiencing lesions or a reaction. Other times, they might not be so lucky. Furthermore, Lupus sufferers may have a sensitivity to bright light. This sensitivity can come on abruptly and even in those with no predisposition to sunlight intolerance. If you suddenly find yourself experiencing symptoms of photosensitivity, it could be a sign that you have Lupus or another autoimmune disease.
