Constipation and Bowel Obstruction

Constipation is the opposite of diarrhea, but you may experience constipation early in the progression of Crohn’s disease. Constipation is the result of a bowel obstruction caused by inflammation within your small intestine. Crohn’s disease causes your small intestine to go through cycles of inflammation and healing. This results in parts of your small intestine becoming too narrow for stool to pass through easily. Your small intestine also loses its ability to produce enough collagen, which acts as a lubricant and makes it easier for stool to pass through the small intestine.

Severe abdominal pain can occur depending on the size and degree of the bowel obstruction. Bowel obstruction can also cause nausea and vomiting. Nausea, constipation, bowel obstruction, and abdominal pain can make it difficult for you to sleep well resulting in constant fatigue.
