Waking Throughout The Night
If you are waking up several times throughout the night but it’s not because of light sleep, it is a sign that you might have underlying medical conditions or that the sleep environment is poor. Simply put, you are not reaching the deepest level of REM sleep.
“Deep sleep, or the final stage of non-REM sleep, is the time when your brain waves are at their lowest frequency,” explains Dr. Lee-Chiong, “and you are at your hardest to wake up.” Therefore, consult with your doctor if you think you have a medical issue. If that’s not the case, consider your bedroom. Is it dark, cool, and quiet enough? How can you improve upon your sleep habits to make falling asleep easier?
