Depression
Depression is not uncommon in those with MS, particularly in those experiencing a lot of pain. The sudden loss of control of ones body, paired with the pain and embarrassment will often cause patients to be irritable, having mood swings, and outbursts of uncontrollable sobbing or laughing (which is known as the pseudobulbar effect).
As with any chronic and life-altering condition, patients will have an extremely difficult time with coming to terms with the reality of their situation. Plus, there is a constant fear of what the future may bring. MS can also affect the emotional regions of the brain, thus affecting emotions and how they are relayed. Medications that help treat MS may also lead to depression.
Individuals who are depressed should speak to a therapist or someone they can trust about what they are going through. Every little bit helps!
