Poor or Improper Diet

Although it is not very common, people can develop hypokalemia from having a poor diet or being malnourished. Those who are most at risk of this are those with eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia, and EDNOS. Without proper nutrition, the body will not get enough of the daily recommended potassium to function, and that will cause hypokalemia overtime. In the case poor nutrition is intended, the individual should receive immediate medical care and intervention.

However, even if you don’t have an eating disorder or are recovering from one, it is still important to include foods rich in potassium in your diet. Be sure you are eating plenty of wholesome foods, such as bananas, beets, watermelon, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and so on.
