Substance Abuse
Those who use alcohol and intravenous (IV) substances run a high risk of getting tuberculosis. Not only do certain illegal drugs dampen the immune system, the groups that are often addicted to such substances are often low income and live in cramped conditions.
Researchers have reported that even legal drugs, such as tobacco, has been found to raise the risk of developing tuberculosis. In fact, about 8 percent of all TB cases in the world are related to tobacco.
