Risk Factors for Epilepsy

Head Injury

Any serious injuries to the cranium, such as those caused by blunt force or by penetrating the skull, can raise the risk of epilepsy exponentially. Furthermore, if you ever have experienced losses of consciousness or amnesia for a length of time, this could raise the chance of seizures.

Usually, a seizure will occur after a traumatic head injury is sustained or within 1-2 days. These are called “early post-traumatic seizures.” Some seizures might occur after 2 years of a head injury, but this is rare. Every year that passes after the head injury seems to decrease the risk.
