Diabetes

You should have noticed by now that there is a pattern. Many of the risk factors for other life-threatening conditions, like heart disease and stroke, are also risk factors for dementia. Therefore, it should not be a surprise that diabetes is also on this list. Adult-onset diabetes, also known type 2 diabetes, can also increase your risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. A Dutch study that was published in Neurology reported that individuals with diabetes who take insulin as a daily part of their treatment were those with the highest risk.

Another study from the New England Journal of Medicine backed up the Dutch one and added that those with high blood glucose levels in spite of treatment were also at risk of dementia. Examinations of the brains of individuals with dementia and diabetes discovered that there was a build up of plaques called beta-amyloids in the brain. Too much beta-amyloid in the brain causes undue stress and leads to cellular damage.
