Risk Factors For Dementia

Female Gender

Biological sex also has influence on the development of dementia. Clinical studies suggest that the female gender has a great chance of getting dementia than males. One Dutch study found women in their 90s have a higher prevalence of dementia than their male counterparts in the same age group. This is worrisome because, according to the United States census, the 90 year old group is one of the fastest growing segments of the nation’s population. Furthermore, women make up three-quarters of that age bracket.

Alzheimer’s disease also affects women differently than men. Behaviorally, women with the disease will become more withdrawn and unstable. Meanwhile, men tend to become much more aggressive as the disease worsens.
