Cut Down on Your Salt Intake

Eating too much salt causes bloating since excess sodium accelerates fluid retention. It also causes many other health problems such as high blood pressure which in turn, can cause heart diseases. Although high potassium intake is good for the heart (because it relaxes the blood vessels), excessive sodium intake has the opposite effect. Too much sodium intake increases water retention in your body which raises your blood pressure. A high blood pressure strains the heart, arteries, brain, and kidneys resulting in the onset of health problems like stroke, heart attack, kidney disease and dementia.

Dealing with such problems alongside COPD is very challenging. In fact, excessive sodium intake among individuals with COPD causes bloating which can make it extremely difficult to breathe. So, it’s advisable to reduce your salt intake. Instead of sprinkling salt in your soups, sauces, and snacks, use fresh and dried spices and herbs to make your food tasty.
