Tooth-Whitening Chemicals
Similar to mouthwashes and rinses high in alcohol, toothpaste or other dental produces with tooth whitening properties can add to your sensitivity. Although it may sound like a good idea, the chemicals used for whitening will affect the exposed dentin and make your teeth hurt. Consider switching to a less harsh toothpaste with more natural ingredients, such as coconut oil, vitamin C, food grade hydrogen peroxide, and xylitol.
Here are some of the chemicals to look out for:
• Sodium hydroxide
• Ammonium hydroxide
• Diethanolamine (DEA)
• Polyethylene glycol (PEG)
However, you should also be aware that fluoride-free toothpaste rarely prevents tooth decay. If you believe you may be allergic to fluoride, consult with your doctor or dentist to see what can be done.
