Certain medical procedures can also influence how the thyroid works and can actually cause damage of the thyroid. For instance, radiation therapy to certain areas, such as the neck, head, and upper chest can be damaging to the thyroid, as can any treatments that contain iodine or anti-thyroid medications. Lastly, exposure to environmental radiation can put you at a higher risk of developing Hashimoto’s disease.
