Unwillingness To Part With Items
Even if an item is completely worthless, a hoarder will fight to keep that item. They will flat out refuse discarding it. Hoarders might also make claims about items having sentimental value, even those most of their possessions are worthless or broken. When asked why they value the item or where it came from, they probably will be unable to form an answer. Also, if asked where a specific item is, they often do not know or they haven’t used it or looked at the item for a number of years.
This is where the difference between collectors and hoarders becomes strikingly clear. Most collectors are unwilling to part with many of their precious items, but those items are often worth a lot of money and are well maintained. Collectors take pride in keeping their collections in mint condition and putting them on display.
On the other hand, hoarders gather up items then neglect to take care of said objects. Hoarders also are unwilling to sell their possessions and will never offer to show others their belongings.
