Why are My Levels Low?
There are several things that can cause you to become iron-deficient. If you have heavy periods, then you are more likely to become an iron-deficient. You are also more likely to be low on this nutrient if you have a digestive disorder. Coelic disease and irritable bowel syndrome can make it harder for your body to absorb iron.
Vegans and vegetarians are more likely to be iron-deficient. It is hard to get enough of this nutrient if you exclude animal products, but it is not impossible. Even if you eat meat and animal products, you may still not get enough of this nutrient from your diet. Some people have a harder time absorbing this nutrient even if they are getting enough of it from their diet.
If you are taking PPIs or antacids, then you are more likely to be iron-deficient. These drugs reduce stomach acid and make it harder for your body to absorb this nutrient.
