Spoon Nails

Koilonychia or Spoon nails are soft nails that look scooped out, with a concaved depression large enough to hold a tiny amount of liquid. This condition is usually one of the first signs of hypochromic anemia, especially the iron-deficiency anemia form. One of the reasons that the nails are no longer convex is the fact that they are so abnormally thin. Some might refer to this condition as the opposite to the nail clubbing mentioned above. Koilonychia is also associated with Plummer-Vinson syndrome (which is characterized by hypochromic anaemia, atrophic glossitis, and oesophageal webs or structures), heart disease, and hypothyroidism.
