Vertical Ridges
Vertical ridges that start from the cuticle and go towards the nail tip are the result of many different health conditions, including one we all experience- aging. Since cell regeneration and replacement tends to slow as we age, the result can be ridges in the nail. Although this isn’t always the case, vertical ridges of the nail can be associated with a change in the texture, brittleness, and/or color of the nail. Trachyonychia is a condition of the nail that is sometimes referred to as sandpaper nails. Individuals who are anemic may also notice vertical ridges on their nails. Individuals with anemia may also develop “spoon-shaped” nails. This is just one reason why it is so important to make sure that you are getting enough iron in your diet.
