Surgery for thyroid diseases unrelated to cancer is usually not necessary right away and is considered a last resort. For cancer, though, if you end up have cancerous cells in the lump, there is little choice but to have surgery, since you don’t want that cancer metastasizing somewhere else.
Should the cancer cells be numerous enough to endanger the surrounding lymph nodes, your physician might even suggest complete removal of the thyroid gland.
