The Symptoms of Low Testosterone

Mood Swings

Depression and anxiety are tied into low levels of testosterone. Multiple studies have found that men with low-T get depression, but the exact cause or correlation between a lack of sex hormones and depression has yet to be pinned down. One of the reasons is that depression can also cause a lack of testosterone and vice versa. Also, men who are depression will experience other symptoms on this list, such as sleep difficulties, weight gain, and decreased sex drive, even if their testosterone levels are optimal.

That said, a 2004 study conducted by Dr. Molly M. Shores found that in a group of 278 men over 45 years old, those who had low-T were four times more likely to be diagnosed with clinical depression than those with normal levels of the sex hormone.

Irritability is another sign of low testosterone. Even if you don’t notice you are more grouchy and unapproachable, others will. Sometimes, it will be your family, friends, and coworkers who tell you that you are being rather churlish lately.

In short, if you have low testosterone, you simply won’t behave as you usually do—and others will often be the first to notice. Should someone bring up the change in your moods, don’t brush them off. Consider it a sign that you could have developed a serious condition and need to receive medical aid.
