Shapes Your Chromosomes

In 2018, Japanese researchers from Osaka University made a startling discovery—that there is a connection between magnesium ions and chromosome cell division. In other words, as Professor Kazuhiro Maeshima from the National Institute of Genetics (NIG) explains, “free cations like Mg^2+ neutralize the charge [in negatively charged chromosomes] so that the chromosomes can condense during cell division.” Condensed chromosomes have less chances of developing mutations and deformities, meaning that magnesium ions could play a role in preventing genetic disorders and other problems. While more research is needed, it’s safe to say that magnesium is necessary for our health, starting right from our genetic foundation.
