Other Autoimmune Disorders

Unfortunately, many autoimmune disorders are co-morbid, which means that usually an individual does not only have one at a time. Therefore, if you have been diagnosed with another immune disorder, you are at an increased risk of also having Sjogren’s syndrome. One autoimmune disorder that is often co-morbid with Sjogren’s is a condition known as Devic’s syndrome. This condition causes inflammation in those nerves that connect a person’s eyes to the brain as well as a health condition referred to myelitis. For this reason, it is sometimes confused with Multiple Sclerosis. However, the weakness experienced with Devic’s syndrome is usually more severe than it is with MS and other similar conditions. Moreover, the treatments for MS is not helpful to those with Devic’s syndrome and if improperly diagnosed, it can be harmful as it can lead to a flare-up or a worsening of the condition.
