When Should I Call a Doctor?

If you or your child has consumed a toxic substance or you suspect they have, do not wait. Call medical care as soon as possible. Call Poison Control at 800-222-1222 if you suspect a poisonous item was ingested.

Individuals with pica who consume uneatable items can be at risk of the following:

• Lead poisoning

• Constipation

• Diarrhea

• Parasite infections

• Bacterial infections

• Mouth and tooth injuries

• Intestinal obstructions or perforations

Medical emergencies are often the result of eating a substance containing known contaminants or toxins, such as mercury, lead, or asbestos. Sometimes, items will rip or block the gastrointestinal tract or get stuck in the throat.
