Prostate Cancer

Of all of the different cancer types, prostate cancer is the one that is most likely to be diagnosed in men, apart from skin cancer. Men over the age of 65 are more likely to develop prostate cancer. Some of the most common symptoms of prostate cancer are: a frequent need to urinate, blood in the urine, difficulties with urination (such as having a hard time either starting or holding back urinating, weak urination, or pain/burning sensations when urinating), pressure/pain in the rectum, and pain or stiffness in areas of the lower body including the lower back, hips, pelvis, and thighs. Prostate cancer can also cause issues with getting and maintaining an erection, blood in the ejaculate, and pain when ejaculating. It is important if you are experiencing any of these conditions to seek medical attention. Fortunately, there are other non-cancerous conditions that can cause these symptoms. The majority of prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas and asymptomatic. Therefore, it is fortunate that this type of cancer tends to be slow-growing.

It is the culprit behind the second highest amount of cancer deaths in men in the United States. African American men are not only more likely to develop this type of cancer than are white men, but they are also at an increased risk of dying from it.

There has been a push for there to be more screening in men for prostate cancer, especially those men who are over the age of 65. However, even if caught early, it is not always the case the prostate cancer will be treatable.
