    Clear Liquids

A clear liquid diet is often considered a more restrictive method for helping relieve diverticulitis symptoms. Your doctor will prescribe it for only a short time; and if you want to start a clear liquid diet on your own, be sure to consult with a medical practitioner before beginning. A clear liquid diet consists of:

    • Water

    • Ice

    • Popsicles made with fruit juice and/or fruit puree

    • Bone broth or soup stock – no noodles

    • Gelatin, such as Jell-o or puddings

    • Tea or coffee without any creams, flavoring, or sweeteners

    • Herbal tea

    • Clear electrolyte drinks (avoid anything with artificial dyes and sweeteners)

    • Water infused with fruit, herbs, and vegetables

    • Plant-based milk alternatives, like almond milk and oat milk

You can also use butter, frozen yogurt, and ice cream if given the okay from a doctor or other medical professional.

    Fermented Foods

While you will notice that fermented foods are also in the list of foods to avoid, there are some foods with probiotics that you can safely eat in small amounts during a diverticulitis flare up. The probiotics can help return healthy bacteria to your gut and aid in better absorption of nutrients. These foods include non-fat plain yogurt or blended yogurt (avoid anything with sugary jellies, toppings, or fruit pieces), kimchi, miso soup, kombucha, and kefir. Fermented foods can reduce bloating and constipation, too.
