Foods To Avoid With Diverticulitis

Excessive Amounts of Fiber

While fibrous foods are often suggested to increase motility in most people, those who have diverticulitis and are experiencing a flare up should avoid high fiber foods at all costs. High fiber intake can inadvertently worsen the severity of the inflammation along the intestinal tract, making digestion more painful. The reason is due to fiber adding bulk to the chyme as it moves along, causing more vigorous peristalsis and colon contractions.

Some high fiber foods to limit or reduce altogether during a flare up include beans and lentils, nuts, legumes, peas, broccoli, sweet potatoes, oranges, and so on.
