Testing For Patients With Possible Diverticulitis
Once abdominal testing has been completed and diverticulitis becomes a possibility, your doctor is going to perform several more tests. The first of these additional tests will check your urine and blood for signs of infection. Women who have not yet went through menopause will need to take a pregnancy test, since pregnancy symptoms often mirror diverticulitis symptoms. Therefore, pregnancy has to be ruled out before moving on.
If you are experiencing diarrhea rather than constipation, doctors will ask for a stool sample. Liver function is also examined to check for health conditions. When all these things have been checked off the list, a doctor will ultimately choose a CT scan to search for infected bulges (or diverticula) around your colon.
