Canned Fruit
Fruit is nature’s medicine. Aside from high levels of antioxidants, fruits contain trace minerals and vitamins, fiber, carbohydrates, and even some protein and healthy fats. Fruit also contains twice as many calories per pound as vegetables, making them a calorie-dense option for fueling yourself in times of pandemonium.
Remember, survival times are not when you should go on a diet. In other words, you can keep fruit cocktails that pack around 300 calories per serving and enjoy them whenever possible. The liquids most fruit cocktails are stored in can serve as additional hydration. Look for varieties that use real fruit juice, such as pineapple and orange juice, to help boost your vitamin C intake slightly.
You can also stock up on sauces. Applesauce is a wonderful choice for meats or to be served alongside cereals, oatmeal, or even as a light dessert.
Don’t forget about canned pumpkin either. While not delicious right out of the can, you can add pumpkin to soups for a burst of vitamin A and other vitamins and minerals.
