Potato Chips / Crisps

You might be able to refrain and eat just a single chip once you learn about what is actually being consumed. Potato chips are a favorite snack around the world, but they are also one of the most dangerous foods on this list. Why?

Potato chips are inherently fatty and caloric. As you already know, the more calories you eat that do not get burned off, the more weight you gain, especially around the abdominal section. But just how much weight can potato chips make you put on? A study was published in the New England Journal of Medicine that found eating 1 ounce of chips a day could cause an average weight gain of 2 pounds per year (CBS News, 2011). Furthermore, potato chips are made with partially-hydrogenated oils and other trans fatty acids, which have been linked to higher cholesterol, high blood pressure, and other health conditions.

Cancer risk is connected to the presence of preservatives, colors, and artificial flavors found in potato chips. Similarly, when the chips are fried at a high temperature, they are exposed to a harmful carcinogen known as acrylamide. Other foods and products that increase acrylamide exposure include processed breakfast cereals, canned black olives, prune juice, bread, crackers, and even coffee. However, not all products mentioned above will have acrylamide, as it is a result of the cooking process.
