Microwave Popcorn
Not many people realize that they are paying a price for the ultimate convenience of sticking something in the microwave. A packet of microwaveable popcorn is one example of this. The bag microwave popcorn is stored is much like a BPA-lined can—but infinitely worse. The bags are lined with a chemcial known as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is also used in Teflon, the nonstick coating on fry pans. PFOA has not only been linked to infertility in women, it has also been found in numerous lab studies involving both animals and humans to increase kidney, bladder, liver, testicular, and pancreatic cancer growth.
But that is not the worst of it. The popcorn itself is tossed with two very worrisome ingredients: GMO soybean oil and propyl gallate. High intake of soybean oil is affiliated with obesity, inflammation related to heart disease, and may even be a “melanoma stimulator” (Albino, et al. 2000). Other studies have found that omega-6 fatty acids like soybean oil also accelerates tumor growth and the onset of cancer (Rani and Kansal, 2011).
