Research has shown that one potential reason for this is the fact that the hormones released during pregnancy can increase the amount of bile containing cholesterol. In the event that the gallbladder is not able to contract as usual, the development of gallstones will occur. In some cases, such as when the gallbladder is blocked by a gallstone or if an infection occurs then surgery might be necessary. Fortunately, this surgery will not hurt the fetus.
