10. Related conditions
There are a whole list of health conditions that can put an individual at a higher risk of developing gallstones in addition to other gallbladder problems. The more common culprits are, unsurprisingly, those that influence how bile flows in and out of the gallbladder, such as scarring of the liver (known as cirrhosis of the liver), primary sclerosing cholangitis, or obstetric cholestasis. There is also an association with inflammatory bowel disease (which is an umbrella term for inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine such as Chrohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis), severe weight management issues and unhealthy diets.
