Swollen Abdomen
Conditions of the liver, including hepatitis, cirrhosis, and liver failure can play a part in the swelling of the abdomen. A build up of waste in the body may cause edema, or retention of fluid. Additionally, the later stages of liver failure, when functionality is heading towards total shut down, fluid will collect in the spleen, abdominal cavity, and even in the liver.
The more fluid that builds up, the greater the distension of the belly. However, depending on the size of patient, the swollen abdomen may not always be visually apparent. They will need to undergo a physical examination to check of abdominal swelling is occurring.
