Coma
There has been growing concerns about the connection between liver disease, liver failure, and hepatic encephalopathy (HE) and even hepatic coma. As liver disease worsens, patients often suffer from a condition known as portosystemic encephalopathy (PSE), or a worsening of brain function due to the liver’s failure to remove toxins from the blood. The toxins diffuse through the blood brain barrier and into the brain tissue.
Thus, in the advanced stages of liver failure, patients may go into a coma. Many individuals who are suffering from diseases of the liver will become irrational, erratic, or display uncharacteristic behaviors, like disorientation, aggression, and paranoia. These behaviors will worsen until the individual becomes comatose.
