Self-Harm and Suicide
Did you know that up to 75 percent of people with borderline personality disorder will attempt self-harm at least once? Some will even become suicidal.
To be clear, self-mutilation (self-harm) and suicidal behaviors are not the same thing. Self-harm is an attempt to rid oneself of uncomfortable emotions or pain through the process of more discomfort. Those who practice self-mutilation will rarely do so with an audience. That said, you may see evidence of self-harm, such as wounds, scars, burns, or cuts.
Then there are those who make suicide attempts. Roughly 70 percent of individuals suffering from BPD will attempt suicide, and nearly 10 percent of BPD sufferers will succeed with suicide. Do not take any threat of suicide as a joke, especially if the person in question is displaying other symptoms on this list.
