Unstable Relationships

As one can imagine, trying to maintain a healthy, independent relationship with others will be more difficult with borderline personality disorder. Because the affected person will be more needy and mistrusting than others when it comes to their romantic partner, it will inevitably put a strain on everyone.

Furthermore, people with BPD often go through a cycle of idealization and devaluation, also called “splitting.” In the beginning the individual with borderline personality disorder will see nothing wrong and feel an intense connection. They will want to spend a lot of time with whomever they are dating or attracted to. However, once the devaluation phase begins, someone with BPD may see the same person as ugly, worthless, or unfeeling and will distance themselves.

This is why most relationships where a partner suffers from BPD are often tumultuous.
