Genetics

Borderline personality disorder is believed to stem from a number of factors, in which genetics also plays a role. If someone in your immediate family, such as your parents, have previously been diagnosed with a mental illness or borderline personality disorder, then you run the risk of inheriting it as well.

However, there is no direct link between BPD and your genes. While certain genes can make people more susceptible to mental disorders like BPD, it is a widely accepted claim that traumatic experiences are the true trigger.
